This Is the Way

from Isn't It Real by Common Railers

/

about

Gordon wrote this as a reaction to the superficial action of liking and disliking something online. The verses refer to Wyeth's Christina's World, Picasso's The Old Guitarist, and Rodin's sculpture, The Kiss.

lyrics

this is the way we see the world
in line and color in space
this is the way we hear the world
in sound and silence in time

raven-haired girl in a long pink dress
crawling across the brown field grass
toward the tracks that might lead home
through the unmowed mass before the barn

crooked-legged man playing guitar
his skin and clothes are threadbare blue
old woman below, child by her side
hidden from view under the oil

woman and man, his brother’s wife
embracing forever, laid bare to harm
in blackened bronze or marble white
their lips apart behind her arm

this is the way we fake the world
through perceptions of like and dislike
this is the way we make the world
through expressions born of our mind
